Eliezer Urbach started congregation Roeh Israel while he was working for Chosen People Ministries. It began as a small home fellowship that multiplied from there. Within a few years, this tiny home fellowship had outgrown Eliezer’s living room, and in 1980 he was moved by God to start an independent congregation. Roeh Israel was born in 1980. Burt Yellin was called to be the Pastor/Rabbi in 1985, where he still serves the Lord today. In 1991, Bill Berg was called to be the Associate Pastor, where he served until he went to be with the Lord in December 2018. What began as a small fellowship has now grown to some 300 people.
When Congregation Roeh Israel began, the vision was to provide a place where Jewish people who believed in Yeshua (Jesus) could feel comfortable expressing their faith in a “Jewish” way. Although this was the original vision and purpose, it soon became apparent that God moved many Gentiles to worship in such a fashion. This blessed union of Jew and Gentile was the vision of God. God was leading so many of the nations to cast their lot with, and worship with those of Israel was the “supernatural” aspect of the Messianic Movement.
Indeed, the hand of God’s blessing can be seen not only in the growth of individual congregations but in the number of congregations. When Congregation Roeh Israel began, we were the only Messianic congregation in the Denver area. There are over a dozen Messianic-oriented congregations in Denver, with more in Ft. Collins, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and many other cities and towns all over Colorado. The growth of Messianic Judaism is not confined to the United States and Canada. Israel has displayed a similar growth of the movement as well. Some 40 congregations from Haifa to Eilat proclaim the good news that “Yeshua hu Adon”—Jesus He is Lord.
We believe that this is an end-times movement of God to restore His people to true faith in Him and declare, “Baruch haba b’shem Adonai” (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord).
